It has been used since the 1950s, when it was discovered that indium tin oxide (ITO), which contains indium, could be used as a transparent conductor in liquid crystal displays. ITO is also used in touch screens, solar cells, and other electronic devices.

Indium, the 49th element, was discovered in Germany in 1863.
Indium is a hard, brittle, silver-white metal that tarnishes easily. It is ductile and malleable. Its melting point is 156.6°C and boiling point is 2,027°C.
It is stable in air and in water but dissolves in acids. When heated above its melting point it ignites burning with a violet flame.
