Tellurium
Pure Tellurium Material
The element tellurium is a silvery white metal that is often found in the form of grayish black powder. It is a soft, brittle, and malleable metal that melts easily. It is similar to arsenic and antimony in appearance and behavior. However, unlike these two elements, tellurium is not poisonous.
It is a member of Group 14 on the periodic table and is classified as a metalloid because it shares some characteristics of both metals and nonmetals. In fact, it is considered a semi-metal because it has metallic conductivity and semiconductive properties.
Because of its high melting point, it is used in alloys to strengthen steels and improve their resistance to corrosion. It is also used to make glass, ceramics, and explosives. Furthermore, when used with rubber, it accelerates the curing process and makes the rubber more resistant to oil.

Physical Properties of Tellurium
Tellurium has two allotropes, crystalline and amorphous. When crystalline, tellurium is silvery-white with a metallic luster. The structure and dimensions of the crystals are very similar. It is brittle but not very hard.
Amorphous tellurium is a black-brown powder prepared by precipitating it from a solution of tellurous acid or telluric acid (Te(OH)6).

Applications of Tellurium
Solar cells
Tellurium is used in solar cells when alloyed with Cadmium as Cadmium Telluride which is used in the production of Photo-Voltaic Thin film Solar panels. In the past few years, the consumption volume has increased significantly and is today the biggest global consumer of tellurium.
Thermo-electric
Alloyed with bismuth (Bi2Te3) or lead (PbTe), it has applications in the electronic and thermo-electric fields. PbTe is also used in far infrared detectors.
Metallurgy
Adding in small amounts tellurium improves the machinability of stainless steels, steels and copper.
Rubber
Tellurium compounds are used in the vulcanization of rubber.
Others
Tellurium is used in rewritable optical discs (CD-RW, DVD-RW, Blu-ray Discs) and in random access memory chips (PRAM). High purity tellurium can be used to prepare X-ray detectors.
